Norman – The OU College Republicans held a Tea Party on Monday to protest against the excessive taxes and outrageous spending being proposed and enacted by the Obama administration and Congress.

Over 100 people attended, representing both students and members of the community. Speakers included Congresswoman Mary Fallin, State Representative Scott Martin, Brandon Dutcher of the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs, and Labor Commissioner candidate Jason Reese. Former State Representative Thad Balkman served as the MC.

“It was a great event, and I’m glad we had it,” said OUCR Vice Chairman Stephen Nehrenz.  “Over 100 people braved the cold and rain to voice their opposition to the ridiculous spending and to raise awareness of how this will affect students for years to come.”

Two days later, many College Republicans participated in the nationwide Tea Party protests held on April 15.  CRs from OU attended the Norman Tea Party and the main Tea Party at the State Capitol.

About 5,000 people were at the State Capitol Tea Party.  OFCR Chairman Emeritus Daniel Swanson said, “It was exciting to be part of such a large crowd of Americans making their voice heard.” He added, “People are fed up with the tax and spend policies Congress has embraced, and want real change, not higher taxes.”
