Nearly 30 young people from across the county gathered together to lay the foundation for Cleveland County’s newest Republican organization.

After a brief business session that included approving a constitution and electing officers, there was a group discussion on what the organization should focus its attention on.

“I was very impressed with the turnout and the level of discussion,” said newly-elected Chairman Joe Fairbanks of Norman. “Everyone had great suggestions and comments, and we all enjoyed meeting each other.”

Finance Director David Greggs of Oklahoma City suggested ensuring the organization helps candidates in general elections, and informs voters about special elections to increase Republican turnout. Communications Director Britney Pedraza of Norman mentioned sponsoring high school clubs, which other YR chapters have also done.

“I had a great time meeting other young Republicans,” said Katie Maricelli, a sophomore at the University of Oklahoma. “It’s more fun to talk about politics in a casual setting instead of everyone just listening to a speaker.”

Other officers elected at the meeting include Vice Chairman Michael Patlan (Norman) and Secretary Meredith Dake (Oklahoma City). The next meeting will be May 18 at a location to be determined.
